Our Mission

National Breast Cancer Foundation's mission is to provide help and inspire hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support services.

Our Story

Helping Women for Over 35 Years

In 1991, Janelle Hail founded National Breast Cancer Foundation with the help of her husband and family. A breast cancer survivor herself, Janelle has made it her mission to educate other women about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in the U.S. Education and timeliness of care make an impact on breast cancer survival rates, particularly for underserved communities.

National Breast Cancer Foundation was founded to fill in the gaps of cancer care, ensuring every woman has the information she needs to get through each step of her breast cancer journey.

National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) offers free, innovative programs to women when they need it most, right now, so that no one navigates breast cancer alone.

NBCF is one of the most recognized and respected breast cancer charities in the world. NBCF has received the highest 4-star rating by Charity Navigator, America’s premier charity evaluator, for 19 years. On average, 80% of our expenses are directed to our life-saving programs. Learn more about NBCF’s impact, or explore our programs below.

Our Impact

Breast Health Education

National Breast Cancer Foundation provides vital breast health education to those in need, empowering them to be more proactive about their breast health. Trained volunteers and staff review educational resources with guests and connect them to local medical facilities for screening and diagnostic exams when needed.

At outreach events, trained volunteers and staff review educational resources with underserved populations who face multiple barriers to accessing health services and adopting screening measures. These barriers include socioeconomic, linguistic, and cultural challenges, as well as lack of knowledge.

In 2025, National Breast Cancer Foundation:

  • Empowered 10,590 volunteers to serve women nationwide through comprehensive breast health education and awareness initiatives.
  • Presented 32 Breast Cancer Awareness in the Workplace sessions to 3,113 participants, helping organizations promote early detection and support employees impacted by breast cancer.
  • Provided personalized navigation support to 906 individuals via phone and email.
  • Distributed educational and awareness materials to 129,391 people, equipping them with knowledge and resources to take charge of their breast health.

Patient Navigation Program

Navigators play a crucial role in supporting individuals through every stage of the breast cancer journey. They educate those in need about the importance of screenings and work to eliminate barriers such as financial constraints, transportation, childcare, and language.

Navigators also provide guidance by answering questions about patients’ breast cancer diagnoses, ensuring patients attend their treatment appointments, and following up with survivors to support their ongoing care.

In 2025, National Breast Cancer Foundation partnered with 27 hospitals to fund 33 Patient Navigators who provided 104,062 navigation services to 37,368 women.

National Mammography Program

National Breast Cancer Foundation has partnered with medical facilities in underserved communities across the U.S. by providing free breast cancer screening and diagnostic services.

Services provided include clinical breast exams, screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, digital breast tomosynthesis, ultrasounds, computer-aided diagnostics, and biopsies.

There is currently no known cure for breast cancer, and its early diagnosis is critical to survival. When breast cancer is found in the earliest, localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is over 99%.

In 2025, National Breast Cancer Foundation partnered with 69 hospitals and provided 25,817 screening and diagnostic services.

HOPE Kits

The HOPE Kit™ is a tangible expression of hope to provide support to women currently undergoing breast cancer treatment. These kits are filled with thoughtful items which are known to soothe some of the side effects from treatment.

In 2025, National Breast Cancer Foundation distributed 27,770 HOPE Kits and 174 Metastatic Kits to patients undergoing treatment. National Breast Cancer Foundation hosted 113 packing parties with support from corporate partners, donors, and volunteers.

HOPE Kit is a trademark of National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.

Metastatic Breast Cancer Retreats

Metastatic breast cancer retreats are a powerful way for National Breast Cancer Foundation to support women with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Retreats focus on the metastatic diagnosis and prognosis, sharing of available resources, and emotional support of patients and caregivers so they can focus on fully enjoying life and time with their loved ones.

In 2025, National Breast Cancer Foundation funded 17 retreats for 229 patients and caregivers.

Support Groups

National Breast Cancer Foundation hosts monthly support groups where our group facilitator works with cancer survivors during “caring & sharing” time to encourage healthy dialogue and education for everyone involved. Having the support of others is an important part of breast cancer survivorship. Research shows that taking part in support groups, where you both give and receive help, is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis.

In 2025 National Breast Cancer Foundation provided hope and meaningful connection to 290 support group participants across the country.

Patient Relief Program

National Breast Cancer Foundation's Patient Relief Program helps remove non-medical barriers to care by providing financial assistance to underserved women through our national network of partner hospitals and clinics. Funds assist patients with expenses related to transportation, food insecurity, medical expenses and equipment, housing and utility expenses, and other financial hardships.

In 2025, National Breast Cancer Foundation partnered with 27 hospitals to provide 1,991 services to 1,457 women, supporting needs related to economic stability and healthcare access.

Military Patient Relief Fund

The Military Patient Relief Fund aids military veterans and service members in overcoming financial strains stemming from a breast cancer diagnosis. These funds eased challenging expenses such as transportation, access to food, childcare, medical copays, housing and utility expenses, and other financial hardships.

In 2025, National Breast Cancer Foundation provided funds to 107 military veterans and service members facing financial struggles during their breast cancer battle.

Community Ambassadors & Outreach Events

National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Community Ambassador program trains and equips community leaders to share breast health information and promote National Breast Cancer Foundation’s screening and navigation programs to those in need.

In 2025, 19,631 individuals were served through this program by 98 fully trained ambassadors at 165 outreach events.

Hope Innovation Lab

The Hope Innovation Lab is National Breast Cancer Foundation’s collaborative space dedicated to developing innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of women affected by breast cancer.

Through pilot programs, strategic partnerships, and data-driven insights, the Lab tests and refines new approaches to patient support, education, and early detection.

Each project is designed to strengthen National Breast Cancer Foundation’s mission and ensure every woman has access to the care, resources, and hope she deserves, no matter where she is on her breast cancer journey.

In 2025, National Breast Cancer Foundation collaborated with 10 partner hospitals to pilot initiatives that expand access to care and enhance the breast cancer experience for underserved women.
